Edge Radius: The Groove Number Nobody Checks

Take a wedge with plenty of groove depth left and hand it to a golfer who plays wet mornings, and about a third of the time they will tell you it does not hold greens any more. The depth gauge says the grooves are fine. They are not fine. What has gone is the sharpness of the corner where the groove wall meets the face, and that corner is doing more of the work than the channel behind it.
What edge radius means
A freshly milled groove has a corner. Not a mathematically perfect one — the rules of golf require a minimum radius so that grooves cannot be cut into knife edges — but a defined corner with a small, consistent curve to it. Manufacturers typically leave something around 0.0035 inches of radius on a new wedge, which is close to the regulatory floor.
Every strike rounds that corner a little. The metal at the corner is the most exposed part of the face and it takes the highest contact pressure, so it deforms and abrades faster than the flat land between grooves or the floor of the groove itself. After a few thousand shots the radius has grown. After ten thousand it can double.
A doubled radius is a corner that has become a curve. And a curve does not cut.
Why the corner matters more than the channel
The popular explanation of grooves is that they “grip the ball”. That is roughly backwards. On a dry strike from a clean lie, the great majority of the spin comes from friction between the ball cover and the flat face material between the grooves. The grooves themselves contribute relatively little.
Where grooves earn their existence is when something is in the way — water, dew, grass juice, sand. Then the job of the groove is to give that material somewhere to go so the flat land can still make dry contact with the cover. Two things have to happen for that: the channel needs volume, and the edge needs to be sharp enough to break through the film and start shearing it away.
Depth provides the volume. Edge radius provides the shearing. Lose the edge and the channel is still there, still measurable, still passing a depth check, and doing considerably less than it used to.
How we measure it
Directly measuring a radius that small requires optical comparison rather than a contact gauge. We use a comparator: the groove profile is magnified and matched against a set of reference radii until one fits, and the reading is recorded to the nearest half thousandth of an inch. It is a slightly old-fashioned method and it is more than accurate enough for the decision it informs.
We take the reading on the same three grooves we use for depth — third, fifth and seventh from the leading edge — and on both the upper and lower groove wall, because they do not wear symmetrically. The lower wall, the one facing the leading edge, takes more of the contact and rounds faster on almost every wedge we see.

The band that catches people out is the third one. A wedge sitting at six thousandths of edge radius will still measure eighty-five percent of its original depth, will still spin acceptably in a dry bay, and will have started to disappoint its owner on wet mornings without them being able to say why. This is the exact wedge that gets brought to us with the complaint framed as a swing problem.
Can it be restored?
Not legitimately, and we will not do it. Re-cutting or sharpening grooves on a club you intend to play in any competition puts it outside the rules, and the various sharpening tools sold for the purpose produce an inconsistent edge that performs worse than the worn one they replaced in about half the cases we have seen.
What can be done is cleaning, properly and often. A groove packed with dried turf and sand has lost its volume just as surely as a worn one, and unlike wear that is entirely reversible. A stiff nylon brush and water after every round genuinely extends usable life. A wire brush does not — it rounds the edges faster and you are paying for the illusion of clean grooves with the thing that makes them work.
What to do with this
If your wedges are more than two seasons old and you play any meaningful share of your golf before the dew burns off, get the edge radius measured before you decide whether they are fine. Depth alone will tell you they are. The wet-face spin test will tell you whether that is true.
