Putter fitting on a surface that behaves like a green

Sixty minutes, $120, on twenty-two feet of stimped surface in the rear room. Shop carpet rolls about four feet slower than a Kentucky green in July and it flatters everything.

First-bounce distance is the reading most golfers have never seen. It is also the one that explains why their lag putts finish short.

The measurement nobody shows you

How far your ball hops before it rolls

A putt does not roll immediately. It launches slightly, skids, bounces, and only then begins to roll truly. The distance covered in that phase is wasted energy and it is highly sensitive to the loft the putter delivers at impact, which is almost never the loft stamped on the head.

A golfer who presses their hands forward is delivering perhaps a degree of loft on a putter built with three and a half. The ball is being driven into the surface, bouncing, and arriving at the hole with less energy than the stroke put into it. That golfer has spent years being told to hit their lag putts harder.

We record it in inches, adjust putter loft until it minimises, and put both readings on the sheet. It is frequently the entire session. A putter loft change costs $30 at the bench and it is the cheapest genuine stroke saver in this building.

Matching the head to the stroke

Arc first, then toe hang, then everything else

01

Measure the arc you have

Not the one you were taught. We record how far the head travels inside the target line on the backstroke and how much the face rotates between the two ends of it. Those two numbers define which head balance will let you repeat what you already do.

02

Match toe hang to that arc

A strongly arced stroke fights a face-balanced head all day and a straight stroke fights a full-toe-hang blade the same way. This is a matching problem, not a preference, and getting it wrong produces the miss that gets blamed on nerves.

03

Then length, lie and head mass

Length sets eye line, lie sets whether the sole is flat at impact, and head mass sets the tempo of the stroke on the greens you actually play. Fast greens in high summer want more mass here than most golfers carry.

Local greens

Bentgrass in April and bentgrass in August are different games

Most Louisville-area courses hold their greens somewhere around a nine on the stimpmeter in spring and push toward eleven when the summer maintenance schedule gets aggressive. That is a wide band, and head mass suited to the slow end feels uncontrollable at the fast end.

We roll on twenty-two feet set to a mid-season speed and note on your sheet how the recommendation behaves at both extremes. For golfers who play a single course we will set the surface closer to that course's typical speed, which requires knowing which course — so tell us when you book.

  • Grip size and shape tested last, because it changes face rotation more than golfers expect.
  • Counterbalanced and long-grip configurations available and fitted without editorial comment.
  • Loft adjustments and length changes are bench work here, done in-house at $30 per club.
  • If your existing putter fits your stroke, the session ends with a loft tweak and a much smaller bill.

Weekday afternoons open up first. Saturday slots in April and May usually fill about three weeks out, so call earlier than feels necessary.
