How Many Range Balls a Groove Set Actually Survives

The received wisdom is that a wedge lasts about two years, or seventy-five rounds, or some other round number that sounds authoritative and turns out to have come from nowhere in particular. We have been measuring groove depth on every wedge that comes through our intake bench since 2019, and asking each owner roughly how much they practise. This note is what that archive says.
The short version: the wear curve is not linear, practice volume dominates round count by a wide margin, and range balls do considerably more damage per strike than golf balls do.
What we measure and how
Groove depth is taken with a digital gauge on three grooves in the centre of the face — the third, fifth and seventh up from the leading edge — and averaged. We take the same three every time so that year-over-year comparisons are honest. A new sand wedge from a major manufacturer typically measures between 0.0185 and 0.0200 inches on that average.
Practice volume is self-reported and therefore imprecise. We ask for buckets per week during the season and rounds per month, and we ask separately whether the practice is off mats or grass. People overestimate, consistently, which means the real wear rate per ball is probably slightly worse than what follows.
The numbers
Grouping by reported annual strike count — practice shots plus approximate wedge shots per round — the average measured depth on 56-degree wedges looked like this across the sample:

The first thing to notice is that the curve is steepest in the middle. Between two and nine thousand strikes a wedge loses about twelve percent of its groove depth, which is more than it loses in the following five thousand. That matches what the metallurgy would predict — the sharp, slightly work-hardened edge left by the milling process wears fastest, and once it has rounded the rate slows.
The second thing to notice is that a golfer who practises seriously reaches nine thousand strikes in about two seasons, and a golfer who plays twice a month and never practises might take eight years to get there. The two-year rule of thumb describes the first golfer and badly misleads the second.
Range balls are worse, and not slightly
Splitting the sample by whether the owner reported practising mostly off range balls or mostly with their own balls produced a difference we did not expect to be as large as it was. At matched strike counts, wedges used predominantly on range balls measured on average eight to eleven percent shallower than wedges used predominantly on premium balls.
The explanation is not complicated. Range balls have hard ionomer covers designed to survive being hit thousands of times and run through a washing machine. That hard cover does not deform into the grooves the way a urethane cover does; it scrapes across the edges instead. Add the grit that accumulates on a range ball and on a range mat, and every strike is mildly abrasive in a way that a clean ball off grass is not.
Mats add to it
The same split by practice surface showed a smaller but consistent effect. Mat practice wore grooves faster than grass practice at matched strike counts, by something in the region of four to six percent. The sample here is smaller and the self-reporting weaker, so treat that as directional rather than firm.
The mechanism is the same abrasion story. A mat surface is harder than turf and the sole and lower face take a scrape on every shot. It also explains something we see regularly on intake: wedges belonging to heavy mat practisers often show noticeably more wear on the lower three grooves than the upper ones, which is not the pattern a course-only player produces.
What depth loss actually costs you
This is where the story gets interesting, and where a lot of golfers get falsely reassured. Depth loss barely affects dry-condition spin. A wedge down to seventy-eight percent of its original depth will spin within a few hundred rpm of a new one on a clean, dry launch monitor, which is exactly the test most golfers get.
Put moisture on the face and the same two wedges separate dramatically. In our paired readings the worn wedge above lost roughly thirty percent of its spin when the face was damp, against about twelve percent for a new one. Depth is also not the whole picture even for the grooves themselves. The sharpness of the groove edge matters at least as much as how deep the channel is, and the two do not decline at the same rate. That has its own note: edge radius, the groove number nobody checks.
So when should you replace a wedge?
We do not answer that with a strike count, because the archive says a strike count is a poor predictor for any individual. We answer it with a measurement. If your wet-face spin drop exceeds about twenty-five percent against your dry reading, the wedge is finished for practical purposes regardless of what the depth gauge says. Under fifteen percent, it is healthy.
